Projects : Tide

A system for accurately measuring tidal flow in estuarine waters using GPS technology

Using our own innovative systems we are able to produce very accurate charts of surface water movements in inshore, estuarine and enclosed bodies of water.

To produce the charts, a number of free floating drogues equipped with GPS data loggers are deployed in pre defined patterns across the area of interest over an agreed period of time. This method allows us to pick up unusual patterns and back eddies within the flow which may be missed when using alternative methods - these details are often vital to such processes as oil spill simulation and the anchoring of large vessels.

Our specialised software then analyses the raw data, removes unwanted information, and produces precise charts of surface currents. For tidal waters this can be done for the various stages of the tidal cycle.

Drogue DeploymentWe also measure wind speed and direction for each of the grid points and compensate for this. Animations can be produced showing the affect of wind on surface water movement for any particular point in the tidal cycle.

The applications of this technology are varied and include tidal mapping in restricted or shallow waters, oil spill simulation, assisting in anchoring of large vessels, environmental monitoring including sewage outfall and port development.
